The Inn at Mattei's Tavern

  • 52 Rooms, 10 Suites

From its earliest incarnation in 1886 as a popular stagecoach stop during California’s Gold Rush to its years as a surreptitious hangout through Prohibition, The Inn at Mattei’s Tavern has long held a fabled place in Central Coast lore. Revered and raucously enjoyed for generations, the beloved landmark opens a new chapter as the definitive luxury destination in the Santa Ynez Valley.

Come to explore the region’s award-winning vineyards and admired horse ranches, then unwind in our reimagined guest rooms and cottage-style accommodations nestled among acres of old-growth palm trees. Crafted and designed to complement Mattei’s original structures, each room features white painted wood cladding, local artwork and exposed brick that reflects the centuries-old cottages onsite; a patio or terrace adjoins most every room.

After dining on the vibrant, seasonal flavors of the region in our open-air restaurant, experience a few of the wine tasting rooms just blocks from the property, enjoy a relaxing spa treatment at The Lavender Barn, or take a dip in our outdoor pool, followed by stories and s’mores gathered around a firepit. You’ll feel right at home with our laid-back version of wine country luxury.

Accommodations

Rich with rustic sophistication and legitimate history, Mattei's Tavern effectively fuses old with new. Dating back to the original Mattei’s, the four historic Cottages (suites) have been carefully restored to preserve their original details. Featuring exposed beams and structural elements, warm wood floors, ample outdoor living spaces and a separate great room, these charming cottages will transport you away. The Homestead and Courtyard Suites are new buildings designed with the fundamental characteristics that attracted travelers to Mattei's centuries ago.

Guest House Studios (guest rooms) are centrally located, and these airy clapboard bedrooms are set within new, two-story buildings. Crafted and designed to complement Mattei’s original structures, each room features white painted wood cladding, local artwork and exposed construction that reflects the centuries-old cottages onsite; a patio or terrace adjoins most every room.
